Senkus Dr. Lester .Bernard.Lave is an Assoe_tate Professor of Economics at Carnegle-Hellon University. One of his speclaltles is measuring the benefits achieved by the control of air pollutlon. Dr. Lave was born August 5, 1939 and educated ~t Reed College, Hassachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. Prom the latter-he received a Ph.D. in economics in 1963. Io 1963 he Joined the faculty of Carnegle-Hellon as Assistant Professor and was appointed Associate Professor in 1968. He was Visiting Assistant Professor at Northwestern University, 1965-66. He has been the recipient of research grants from the U. S. Publlc.'. Health Service 1963 and 1968-71, Resources for the Future 1967-68, and National Safety Councll 1967-68. He has been a consultant to the Rand Corporation 1960: Systematic Analysis and Research Corporation 1961-62, the Presldentls Appalachlan.Study Cor~nlssion 1964-65, and the U. S. Department of Defense 1966 to date. Me is ~ member of the Economic Assoclatlon~ Statlstlcal Assoclatlon~ Econometric Society, and the Economic Historlcal Association. Hr. Eugene Seskln is a graduate s~udent in the Craduate School of Industrial Administration, Carnegle-Hellon University. He and Dr. Lave publlshed the attached paper in Science .lfi~, 723-733 (Augu.st.1970). Since then Hr. Seskln may have received a degree from Carnegle-Hellon. The paper, "Air Pollution and Human Health", lhScle~ce 369, 723-33 (August 1970) by Lave and Seskln is one of the best reviews, of air pollutlon and human health to appear in 1970. The authors mention smoking habits as one of the many factors which need to be considered in this type of study, They do not take a position on the smoklng-health controversy, although they are aware of the many statlstlcal papers which have been publlshed in this area.
