-1 University of Wisconsin Medical. School Department of Medicine ' PETER I. LELKES, Ph.D. Associate Profeswr Director. Iaboratory of Cell Biology (414) 288-9651 Milwaukee Clinical Campus -1 .(414) 283-7753 FAX (414) 283-7874 August 24, 1992 Dr. Arthur D. Eisenberg Associate Research Director. The Council for Tobacco Research USA,.Inc. 900 Third Avenue New York, NY 10022 ,11k U~' ~) RE: Subgroup Specialty Symposium on`".Endothelial Cell Heterogeneity and Organspecificity" at the Annual Meeting of the;American Society for Cell Biology,e,Denver, CO, November.15-19, I992 ; Dear Dr. Eisenberg: _ As you may be aware, ASCB has invited me to organize the second annual.subgroup specialty symposium . on "Endothelial Cell Heterogeneity and Organspecificity" which will take place on Sunday, November 15, 1992 prior to the annual meetings of the American Society for Cell Biology. This meeting .is the follow-up of last year's successful meeting under, the same title which was made possible in part by the generous support from industrial sources and which was attend by more that 250 people. The topic of this symposium is important and timely since many aspects of "Endothelial. Cell Biology" have become the focus of today's basic and applied research in cellular biology. For your information, I have enclosed a list of:invited speakers to this symposium. The issue of endothelial cell heterogeneity and organspecificity is of particular interest to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies because of the many potential clinical applications, be it passivation of blood contacting surfaces, seeding of vascularr grafts, specific targeting of drugs for accurate pharmacological interventions, gene-therapy, etc. I am aware of your company's interest in endothelial cell research and would like to invite representatives of your company to-participate in the symposium. I would be happy to discuss with you the possibility of having a distinguished scientist of your company present some aspects of your work which relates to endothelial cell heterogeneity and organspecificity at this symposium. - To make this symposium possible. I would specifically like to ask you for your generous support to help defray some of the expenses. The ASCB sponsors these subgroup symposia, but does not contribute in any way to the costs for bringingtbgether an excellent rostrum of speakers. As a matter of fact, in addition to covering the costs for the speakers, this year we will also have to pay for all the facilities. Therefore, your corporate hi is very much needed and appreciated in these times of tightening budgets. As a vsible outcomespo~ of this meeting, I will assemble a booklet of abstracts and encourage the speakers to publish their presentations in the new journal "Endothelium". ~SINAI SAMARITAN MEDICAL CENTER •:SINAI CAMPUS • 950 NORTH TWELFTH SL •.P.O.
