Tiil: CorNcu. Focc TomCco Rj:si:nizcli-U.S.A., Inc. June 28, 1973 MEMORANDUM H KOOS~$21~~ Td: Drs. Hockett, Loosli, Nbrdsiek, Sommers and Wyatt FROM: W. U. Gardner SUBJECT: Application 741-B. Joseph M. Lauweryns, M.D., Ph.D., University of Leuven, Belgium. "The Lymphatics of the Lung. Their Role in Fluid Transport and Clearance of Airbarne Particulate Matter in Normal and Er.perimental Conditions and in Various Lung Diseases." This is very =nuch like the report and application that was received last winter except that the progress report has been brought up to date and he seems to put q'reater emphasis on the functional aspects; particularly in the studies with rabbits. Furthermore, he has withdrawn the request for purchase of the scanring electron microscope. In his recent studies with new-borh rabb'its and some adult rabbits he has given iritranasai instillations of India ink or ferritin and removed the animals rangina from a few minutes to several days. The studies are t.hem comnleted by light and E.P!. examination of the lunqs. He emphasizes the limited knowledge of edema of the lung. He states that E.M. studies can co?.triivute much to understanding this problem. I would think that electrolytu shifts would be much more important than morphology alone. The caveolae that Una Smith has described are not emphasized in his work. They would seen to be of significance in fluid shifts between the blood vessels and the alveoli. The new applicatioh from Zion Hospital, San Francisco would overlap some of the 741 proposal but would emphasize the use of isotopes and quantitative aspects of the uptake of isotopes in the lymph and blood of dogs. I think that these studies are likely to be more productive than 741 although the two are somewhat complimentary, or.e emphasizing morphology, the other physiology. Another new aspect of this application is the emphasis on the neuro-epithelial bodies in lung tissue. They are argentophilic and are produceis of serotonin. This is not an original observation. Klaus Bensch described then a number of years agci in human lungs and lung tumors of these cells have been described. This is undoubtedly qood work. The ap+plicant stresses the multi- disciplinary aspect df his approach but does not live up to the statement. I1is approach is almost en'tirely morphological. Although he is now emphasiaino particulate uptake he overlooks electrolyte shifts He emphasizes lym, phatics and seems little concerned with :apillaries. ' supplies. Budget: $24,555.00 for two technicians and animals and expendablc W.U.G. WUG : ek
