H KI-i 1 40007 Dr. Esterly called prior to submitting his app lication, stating that he would like to feel that he was not deserted --- it had been some time since he had had a staff visit. He is submitting a request for a renewal ($34,482.00) with two technical assistants marked (*) but I could not see that the * was explained. It is essentially an eyttension of the first application which I assume is largely completed. The paper on the bacterial pneumonia is in preprint. Photographs of the two papers on kerosene and papain damage were included. The repair processes were fo3lowed with some enzyme studies, light and e.m. microscopy. Clara cell not emphasized, surfactin recovery not studied. Type 2 cells primary source of regenerating cells. Kerosene seemed to produce the longest effect (inflammatory). Papain the most emphysema. I Continuation: Complete kerosene and papain 5tudy. Study cadmium-induced metaplasia, paraquat-induced fibrosis and oxygen poisoning using much the sane eud points that were used on the other substances. Not a very imaginative program. Cadmium probably has the most relevance but unless it is followed to greater depths its contribution will not be great. I think that others have now established the Type 2 cell as the source cell of the alveolar epithelium and have noted that both alveolar cells may ~ engorge particulates. The lysosomal enzymes that are being studied will not contribute much that is new.
