NEWS AND WORLD REPORT july 9, 1962 SMOKING AND DEATH: NEW REPORT, NEW STUDY CIfiCA6O-A new study shows ' that death rates from heart disease, . chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, influ, etva and' other lung diseases were, higher in cigarette smokers than in nonamokers. This was reported recently to the American College of Chest Physicianss by Dr. E. Cuyler F$ammond' of the American Cancer Society. Conciusions were based on autopsies of 240 male and two female patients who died att the Veterans Hospital, East Ora -^, N. J. Other studies have linked cigarette smo]cing with lung cancer. The tobacco industry contends;, however, that there is no evidence that smoking causes an increase in lung caneer.. In this connection, the A;nerican Medical Association announced on June 27 that it is launching a year-long study on the subject. AMA of&cials said they were not'saHsfied with, findings of other studies to date. NEW' YQRK KEtROR New'York, New York June 25', 1962 Cigs Are Ki'lers, Say MD5 CHICAGO, June 24!
