ATTORNEY PRIVI7.EGED DOCUlENT
BROWN i WILLIAMSON TOBACCO CORPORATION
INTERNAL CORRESPONDENCE
TO: MR. E. PEPPLES
FROM: 14t. M. L. REYNOLDS
DATE: JULY 10, 1981 y.~
SUBJECT: SMOKE PAtIII. EVALUATIONS OF BARCLAY KS, NOW KS, AND
CARLTON KS WITH "EXTEDTDED" RIGID SLEEVES AROUND THE FILTER
IgTBOD
The "enclosed" cigarettes were constructed as follows. A clear, rigid,
hard plastic tube (1 cm long, 8 mm inaer diameter, 9.5 mm outer
diameter) vas placed around the filter mouth-end of each test ciga-
rette, and General Electric white silicone rubber caulk was applied
carefully around the full circumference of the filter as shown below.
The tube estended beyond the eouth-end such that the filter was
recessed 2 mm. `
~ The caulk sealed the juncture of the sleeve and filter to prevent any
air beinC drawn between the tvo during puffing and also held the sleeve
firmly in place. Cigarettes were not evaluated for at least 48 hours
after caulking.
A trained consumer panel (11 low-deliver7 nonmenthol smokers) then made
replicated ratings of each of the three "as is" cigarettes and three
"enclosed" cigarettes for amount of strength and ease of draw. All
cigarettes were masked with tape to cover the brand logos. Panelists
used a 9-point rating scale (1 - easier draw or less strength;
9 - harder draw or more strength).
