I I ! I I I I ! I I I I I I I I AUTHOR: MICHIELS, F.M., J.J. MONTAGNE AND I. CHOUROULINKOV DATE: 1982 TITLE: ETUDE DES EFFETS DE LA FUMEE DE CIGARETTES PAR INHALATION CHEZ LE RAT CITATION: MEDECINE/BIOLOGIE/ENVIRONMENT MAI-AOUT 56-62 (1982) STUDY DESIGN: Male and female Wistar rats were exposed to cigarette smoke on a Hamburg type II smoke machine 5 time/day, 5 day/week, for a period of 12 months. Blood samples were drawn every 6 weeks and histological analysis was performed at the end of the experiment. RNDINGS/RESULTS: Cigarette smoke induced a reduction of blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, acid phosphatase and cholinesterase, while an increase of alkaline phosphatase, alpha-l-antitrypsin and aspartate aminotransferase was observed. Smoke-induced pathological changes of the respiratory tract were classified into inflammatory lesions and proliferative lesions. The incidence of inflammatory lesions was negligible in the larynx and the trachea, depended on the type of cigarette in the bronchus, and was most pronounced in the lung. Proliferative lesions were observed in the larynx, trachea and lung, but infrequently observed in the bronchus. Ultrastructural studies showed, beyond alteration in several organelles, the presence of tar, not only in the macrophages, but also in the epithelial cells. CONCLUSIONS: This experimental model, permits the evaluation of the biological effects of cigarette smoke and is applied with success to the study of experimental cigarettes.
